Christophe de Rohan Chabot

Untitled (Bunny strass 70) (2024)

The work might be perceived as an affirmation, celebration, an accelerationist manifesto relating to some digital culture’s iconography—a "shiny bunny" reminiscent of Jeff Koons’ heritage or a common Pikachu sculpture in a shop window. Christophe de Rohan Chabot draws inspiration from this imagery through analysis, yet he views his work as an artifact driven by a combination of materials. Rhinestone foils are glued atop an aluminum structure, imitating Swarovski diamonds, but the 'cheap' quality and fragility of the material impart an informal and toxic character. De Rohan Chabot appropriates this as a mask, a trick, a 'faux semblant' that forms part of an aesthetic gesture. The work embodies a fatigue with its own identity, appearing seductive yet simultaneously distant and slightly aggressive. It sometimes manifests minimal forms of abject or discreet grunge expressions.
